Between 1842 and 1883, designs registered at the Patent Office Design Registry would bear a registration mark, giving details of the registration. After 1883, designs were issued with a simple registration number. As shown in the marking, the registered (Rd) marking occurs inside a diamond. At the top of the diamond mark, in a circle, is the numeral one (1) signifying the registered object is made of metal. Immediately below it is the letter E which refers to the registration year, in this case, 1855. At the left of the diamond is another E which refers to the month (May) and to the right is a 31 which is the day of the month. This weight was registered with the Design Registry on May 31, 1855. The 2 at the bottom of the diamond refers to a parcel or bundle number in the registration process. The marking VR refers to Victoria Regina, or reigning queen Victoria. As an interesting point, the R after Victoria means she is a reigning queen. If the queen were a non-reigning queen, such as the wife of a reigning king, the R would not be used. Queen Victoria (Alexandrina Victoria; 24 May 1819 – 22 January 1901) was the monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837 until her death. From 1 May 1876, she used the additional title of Empress of India. The marking on the weights are in the avoirdupois system. The largest weight is marked with a 1 pound symbol lb with a line through the lb at mid letter.)
