Candlestick Stick Pins | CANDLESTICK STICK PINS - These miniature candlestick stick pins, some plain steel or gold, and others in gold with mother of pearl candles and colored stone flames were awarded to graduates of some of the nation’s mining schools. The oldest mining school in the US, the Columbia School of Mines in New York City, was started in 1864. Around the turn of the century, graduates of the school were awarded miniature miners’ candlestick stick pins (two in center front) as a symbol of their achievement. Other mining schools at Berkeley, California (far left) and the South Dakota School of Mines (far right) also presented these miniature candlestick stick pins to new graduates. These candlestick stick pins are rare today and highly sought by collectors. See the mining stick pin collection shown in my Miscellaneous Mining Items album. | ![]() |
