Wheelbarrow Merritt Mine | MINING WHEELBARROW MERRITT MINE - This steel wheelbarrow from the latter part of the 1800s is unique. The riveted cylindrical tub is 27 in. high with a 13 in. dia. and swivels at the side attachment point with the handlebars. The steel spoked 16 in. dia. wheel is 4 in. wide. The overall length is 52 in. The wheelbarrow was recovered from the Merritt Mine on Socorro peak west of New Mexico Tech in Socorro, NM. The Merritt Mine first opened in 1867 as one of three producing silver mines in the Socorro Peak Mining District. None of the three mines were ever as productive as the Magdalena district mines, such as the Kelly and Waldo mines. The Merritt had one main level with several shafts. The mine was closed in 1894. From about 1909 to 1965, students in the geology, metallurgy and mining engineering departments at New Mexico Tech used the Merritt Mine for field work. | ![]() |
